17 May 2005 The Business Times

The Spore govt on Tues cut its 2005 gross domestic pdt growth forecast fr 3.0-5.0% to 2.5-4.5% aft a slower-than-expected performance in the 1st quarter.

Figures released by the Ministry of Trade and Industry showed GDP in the Mar quarter grew 2.5% fr a yr ago, slower than the 6.5% expansion registered in the Dec quarter.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP in the 3 mths to Mar shrank 5.5% compared with a 7.9% expansion in the Dec quarter, the ministry said.

"In view of the 1st quarter's weaker-than-expected economic performance, it would be unrealistic to maintain the official forecast range of 3.0-5.0%," Friedrich Wu, director of the ministry's economics division, said at a media briefing.
"Such a growth rate would be difficult to achieve esp in the 2nd quarter when yr-on-yr growth must be compared with a very high base of 12.3% in the 2nd quarter of last yr."

Mr Wu said, however, it was highly unlikely the economy would contract on a quarterly basis again in the current quarter. A technical recession is determined by two straight quarters of negative growth on a quarterly basis.

A sharp moderation in manufacturing activity, the lynchpin of the Spore economy, was the major factor behind the slower economic activity in the March quarter.
Manufacturing, which acc for a quarter of the economy, grew 3.1% in the 1st quarter fr a yr earlier, little changed fr the 3% initial estimate. It slowed fr a 14% expansion in the 4th quarter.

Svs which includes trade, hotels and banking rose 3.5% fr a yr earlier in the 1st quarter, unchanged fr the initial est. Svs had expanded 4.8% in the 4th quarter.

Construction contracted 7.3% fr a yr earlier, falling for the 15th quarter in 16. The govt had initially est a 6.5% decline.

Li Xueying, Sue-Ann Chia May 17 2005 The Straits Times

THE search for Singapore's next elected President will begin officially in 2 weeks.
Potential candidates can submit their names fr May 31. It will be held bet Jun and Aug.

Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said tis yest in Parliament. He was responding on behalf of the Prime Minister to Non-Constituency MP Steve Chia, who asked if the presidential election would be held tis yr.

Mr Wong said the exact date had yet to be determined, as PM Lee Hsien Loong had not decided when to issue a writ tt sets in motion the election process. Under the Constitution, the presidential election has to be held anytime fr Jun to Aug.

President S R Nathan ends his 6-yr term on Aug 31. When asked about his plans recently, he had said: 'Everybody is speculating. I'm not speculating. I'm hoping to look into retirement.' A veteran civil servant and former diplomat, he was the 2nd person to be elected to the office after the Constitution was changed in 1991 for the President to be elected by the people. He was unopposed, as no other eligible candidate came forward.

If President Nathan chooses to retire, speculation is focused on Dr Tony Tan as a possible candidate, after it was announced last year that Dr Tan would step down as Deputy Prime Minister after June.

The 1st person to be elected President was Mr Ong Teng Cheong, who was also a former DPM.
Even though Mr Wong has spelt out the timeframe within which a Presidential Election must be held, there may be no contest if there is only 1 candidate.

Criteria for presidential aspirants are these:
1. They must be at least 45 years old
2. They have at least 3 yrs' experience as ministers, heads of statutory boards or key government agencies, or have headed a company whose minimum paid-up capital is $100 million, or have equivalent experience.

Candidates must be screened by the Presidential Elections Committee and get a certificate of eligibility before they can be nominated. This certificate is given only if the committee is satisfied tt the candidate is of integrity, good character and reputation, and has the necessary experience in financial matters.

For tis year's Presidential Election, candidates can apply to the committee for a certificate fr May 31, which is 3 mths before the incumbent President's term expires, and not later than 3 days aft the issue of the writ.
The 3-member committee consists of 2 senior civil servants and a member of the Presidential Council for Minority Rights.

In response to Mr Chia's suggestion for a publicity campaign to encourage contest, Mr Wong said: 'I am sure the media will give wide publicity when the Presidential Elections Committee starts inviting those interested to apply for the certificate of eligibility later tis mth. 'The Government does not determine how many persons will apply for the certificate of eligibility. It is up to Singaporeans to come forward to present themselves as candidates.'
Also approved yest were changes tt will simplify procedures for the presidential election and future general elections.

The changes streamline the nomination process, allowing fewer forms to be submitted and giving more room for minor mistakes to be corrected on Nomination Day.

Mr Wong said 'deserving candidates should not be disqualified from standing because of minor technicalities'.

In the 2001 election, a Workers' Party team was disqualified because of a form that was wrongly filled in. With the changes, candidates will find it easier to correct 'non-fatal' or minor errors on Nomination Day. New forms will be made available by Elections Department officials. A Commissioner of Oath will also be present to stamp and verify the candidate's forms. Computers will be available for candidates to check the particulars of those supporting their nomination.

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Australian pop star Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo immediate treatment, her management team said.

Her tour of Australia was postponed following the announcement.

A statement from Minogue's management said the 36-year-old's diagnosis was confirmed this week during a visit to the southern Australian city of Melbourne.
"Whilst at home in Melbourne with her family this week prior to her Australian Showgirl Tour, Kylie was diagnosed with early breast cancer," the statement said.

In the statement, Minogue said: "I was so looking forward to bringing the Showgirl tour to Australian audiences, and am sorry to have to disappoint my fans. Nevertheless, hopefully all will work out fine and I'll be back with you all again soon."

The Showgirl Tour was to have included performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth over the next month.

Michael Gudinski, head of Frontier Touring, the company promoting her Australian tour, said it was "way too early to tell" when Minogue might resume her tour and that it was appropriate to postpone the tour indefinitely to "let her find her space and deal with it."
"I'm just hoping and praying because the doctors found it so early that everything will be OK," he told an Australian television network.
Our thoughts and I'm sure many, many legions of Kylie fans will be with her all the way," he said.

Minogue began as an actor on the long-running Australian soap opera "Neighbours" before launching her singing career with hits such as "Loco-Motion" and "I Should Be So Lucky."
Her fame soared after her critically acclaimed 2001 album "Fever" which reached number one in charts around the world and number three in the Billboard album chart. On the popularity of the single, "Can't Get You Out of My Head," "Fever" sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, according to Minogue's Web site.

In late 2003 her song "Slow" became Minogue's seventh number one single in Britain, more than 15 years after "I Should Be So Lucky" topped the charts there in 1988. "Slow" also was nominated for a Grammy.

In the past, Minogue has auctioned one of her bras to raise money for breast cancer research and worked to raise awareness of prostate cancer, after her father was diagnosed with it.

For all you girls < = 30 yrs
For those who are turning 30
For those who are scared of moving into their 30's
For guys who are scared of girls > 30!!!!...

As I grow in age, I value women who are > 30 most of all. This is why

1. A woman > 30 will never wake you in the middle of the night to ask "What are you thinking?" She doesn't care what you think.

2. If a woman > 30 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining abt it. She does something she wants to do. And it is usual sth more interesting.

3. A woman > 30 knows herself well enough to be assured in who she is, what she is, what she wants and from whom. Few women > 30 give a hoot what you might think about her or what she's doing.

4. Women > 30 = dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. If you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you.

5. Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it is like to be unappreciated.

6. A woman > 30 has the self-assurance to introduce you to her women frends. A younger woman with a man will often ignore even her best friend because she doesn't trust the guy with other women. Women over 30 couldn't care less if you're attracted to her friends because she knows her friends won't betray her.

7. Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman > 30. They always noe.

8. A woman > 30 looks good wearing bright red lipstick. Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman > 30 is far sexier than her younger counterpart. Older women are forthright and honest. They will tell you right off if you are a jerk if you are acting like one! You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over 30 for a multitude of reasons.

Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal.
For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed hot woman of 30+, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-yr-old waitress.

Ladies, I apologise. For all those men who say, "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free".
Here's an update for you.Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage, why? Because women realise it's not worth buying an entire Pig, just to get a little sausage.

you agree??
